Guidelines For Elective Classes
TEACHER GUIDELINES FOR DISCIPLINE
1. The first day of classes, each teacher needs to make their class aware of the HEARTH
Standards of Conduct and any class-specific rules. These standards must be adhered to
for the student to be able to participate.
2. If a child does not adhere to the standards or their behavior is disrupting the class the
teacher may give the child one warning. If the disruption is injurious or severe, the
student may be removed from the class immediately and taken by the hall monitor/class
coordinator, to call their parents. If a parent is not available. The student will remain
outside the class, under the supervision of the hall monitor or another responsible adult.
3. Second offenses require parental notification.
4. The teacher may opt after the second offense (or the first, if the offense is severe) one
of the following solutions:
a. Require that the parent or a responsible teen sibling attend the class with the
child.
b. Suspend the child for the following week.
c. Expel the child from class. No refund is given in such cases.
5. The teacher should make an effort to notify the parent of each child's progress or needs,
periodically, either by note, phone call, or conversation in person.
6. The teacher will do well to remember to praise good behavior and hard work. While
talent is admirable, we want to encourage all students to do their best, and not frustrate
the efforts of those with less natural ability. Specific praise and specific suggestions are
more helpful than general approval or disapproval.
7. Teachers may opt to give a certificate of completion or a grade at the end of classes.
The teacher should make any requirements for grades or certificates known to the parents.
Teachers are encouraged to provide proof of completion when possible, as this aids
homeschooling parents in building a portfolio for their child.
8. Teachers are encouraged to ask parents to volunteer/assist in the class as needed.
9. If a child withdraws from the class after the ten week session has begun, refunds may
be given to the parent in whole or in part, at the discretion of the teacher. (Refunds may
not be possible if materials have been purchased or the class size is reduced so that it
otherwise would have been canceled.
GENERAL GUIDELINES
1. The teacher needs to arrive early enough to have their classroom set up before students
arrive.
2. All requirements on the part of the student and/or parent must be clearly
communicated.
3. If the teacher is unable to attend on a given week, they must provide a substitute, or let
the students/parents know that the class has been canceled. If a sudden emergency or
illness arises the morning of their class, the teacher needs to contact the coordinator
to let them know.
Classes may be scheduled in the week or two following the session, but the class
coordinator must be notified as soon as the need for this is apparent, so that the church
may be reserved.
4. The teacher must also adhere to the HEARTH Standards of Conduct and may never
verbally abuse, humiliate or physically discipline a child. Physical restraint may be used
as a last resort to keep the child from hurting himself or others. In such cases, the class
coordinator should be called upon to assist. A child may be picked up and removed from
the classroom if they refuse to leave when told to. Confrontation must be without malice.
5. The teacher needs to be aware of any impairments such as poor vision, or hearing, and
take these things into account when communicating with the child. Information about any
special needs would be on the registration form, turned in the first day of classes, These
should be reviewed by the teacher, and kept on-site, by the coordinator.
6. Teachers need to leave their classroom in as good condition as they found it.
7. Parties involving food must be held in the auditorium/kitchen area, or outside. Make
sure the area is cleaned up afterward. Paper plates, etc. for such events should be paid for
by the teacher or donated by the students/parents.
8. All funds needed for the class are to come from the fee charged at the beginning of the
session. No additional HEARTH monies are allocated for this purpose.
9. If you have trouble with the heating/cooling levels, please notify the hall monitor or
class coordinator. Do not adjust these yourself or allow the students to do so. Do not
allow children to operate any of the church's equipment.
10. The upstairs is off limits to HEARTH students.
11. No explosive, flammable or toxic materials should be used in the building.
12. In an effort to avoid any appearance of evil, when having a private conference with a
young child or a student or teacher of the opposite sex, please keep the classroom door
open.
