In The Way They Should Go
In The Way They Should Go
Jane E. Clark
Training our children is a huge responsibility. It would be so easy to let "experts" tell us what to do and just follow in lock-step. But unfortunately, the experts often have an agenda of their own that doesn't line up with God's agenda for families. We have a responsibility, not to do what we think is right, but to find out what IS right and do that.
Homeschoolers have been going against the flow of society for a long time. Even the academic standards set down for us by those who "know better" come into question. Is it God's will for each child to study the same curriculum in the same way over the same period of time? Has he made all children the same, or for that matter, each parent/teacher? The Bible describes the Body of Christ as having many parts and many different purposes for working together as a unit. Each part does it's own work. Each one has his own gift. No one part should look down on another because it has a different role to play. We are all His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works which HE has prepared in advance for us to do. So, how do we know how to bring our children up in the way they should go?
Some things are evident in Scripture. Teach them to do right, work hard, be respectful, carry their own load and help others... to love God and serve people. But when it comes to choosing:
- K-12 curriculum, college or apprenticeships, Military service, self employment or the job market -
these things must be learned through observing the child's gifts, strengths and weaknesses as well as being sensitive to God's calling on their lives. It takes time on your knees and time listening to your child.
A college degree may be necessary for some, but not for all. (The richest men in America didn't finish college.) And for that matter, riches aren't the principal thing either. It is far better to have wisdom, and understanding. The knowledge of God is greater treasure than riches. Yes, we want them to do well, and will teach to that end, preparing them for many options. But keeping in mind; "The mind of a man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps" and "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths." By following His leading, you will be training your child in the way they should go!
